The Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) is getting better & better!

This 3rd book in the series Career of Evil (Cormoran Strike #3) has been my most highly anticipated book of 2015. I have been waiting all year for this release and as soon as it came out I downloaded it on Audible (free trial for new members) and started listening to it straight away. I have to say I was blown away by this book. It has all the elements I’m looking for in a good book including a touch of romance, a great mystery and lots of action!  This series just keeps getting better & better!

Series reading order

These are all  standalone mystery novels but it helps if you read them in order.

About the Author

If you don’t know, Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for JK Rowling and that’s what made me want to read the first book 2 years ago.  I haven’t read Harry Potter so I didn’t have anything to compare it to, but I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard of her.  The secret didn’t stay secret for too long!

Blurb for The Cuckoo’s Calling (Cormoran Strike #1)

A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel’s suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

My Review: A descriptive British type mystery that kept me hooked and listening throughout the whole drama filled with the increasingly intense life of private detective Cormoran Strike.  I loved the 2 main characters in the detective agency and how their working relationship was developing. We started to get to know them in this book bit by bit.  Strike can be hard & cold but that’s what makes him so loveable.  The authors writing is fantastic and I could see myself back in London and part of the detective agency. 5 stars!

Blurb for The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike #2)

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days—as he has done before—and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine’s disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were to be published, it would ruin lives—meaning that there are a lot of people who might want him silenced. When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any Strike has encountered before…

My Review:  I looked forward to this book and was not disappointed when I got to know and like Strike even more than I did in the first book.  We got to help Robin & Strike work their way through solving a murder and see how the case progressed.  This story really developed well and I enjoyed following Strike with the help of Robin and the ups and downs of their detective agency in this faster paced follow up. 5 stars!

Blurb for Career of Evil (Cormoran Strike #3)

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman’s severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible – and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them… Career of Evil is the third in the highly acclaimed series featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, it is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. Cormoran Strike is back, with his assistant Robin Ellacott, in a mystery based around soldiers returning from war.

My Review: I loved this book! This is the 3rd book so far in the series & by far my favourite. Each book is improving upon the previous & I can’t wait until the next one hopefully next year! It’s hard to imagine the richest writer in the world bothering to write more books but I’m sure glad she is. This book delves a lot deeper into the personal life of Robin and is action packed. There is a hint of romance as we follow Strike & Robin solve their latest case. 6 stars!
