With regard to the sequence of the books, the romantic couples are different in books 1 and 2. The main couple from book 1 is very much present in book 2 but there is a new romantic pair introduced and explored in this second book. So in that way you could consider it a standalone. However the stage is set for the mystery in book 1. There is enough recap in book 2 that I believe you could read it alone but I think reading them in order is probably best.
